Pizza Margherita

Caprese

I’ve had a few liberating moments in my life: getting a driver’s license; starting college; graduating from college; traveling abroad for the first time. But none of these compare to the freedom of being able to bake pizza from scratch.

Imagine having a brick-oven pizzeria that delivers 24/7/365. Except it’s not a pizzeria, it’s yourself. Here’s how to make it happen.

This is all adapted from articles elsewhere on the web: this pizza dough recipe, this sauce recipe, and this advice from the NYTimes.

It’s true that there is an art to pizza-making, but don’t get bogged down in details. Even if you get something wrong, it’ll still be pretty damn good–an approach you should take to most cooking.

Parsnip zucchini soup

Parsnip zucchini soup

Here’s an easy soup made with parsnips, or as I like to think of them, perfumed carrots:

Start a mirepois–a 1:2:2 mixture of diced celery, onions, and carrots, in olive oil, over medium-low heat. When this mixture is soft and starting to brown, add in another 1 part potatoes , 1 part zucchini, and 2 parts parsnips (all diced). Add slightly more than enough stock (vegetable or chicken) to cover this, and toss in a bay leaf, a whole clove, a few dashes of coriander, and simmer for half an hour on low heat, or until parsnips are soft. Stir in a handful of chopped scallions. Ladle out half the soup into a blender, pulse a few times, and return to pot. Stir until even, and salt and pepper to taste.

Optional: garnish with chopped parsley, a dollop of sour cream, grated parmesan, or some julienned cucumber.

Serve with a hunk of homemade bread.

Social Media Intern

What I thought my job would be like:

Me: Hi, I’m the social media intern, and I’m taking a technology usage survey of the office. What do you use to organize yourself?

Someone less hip than me: I use stickies.

Me: Oh yeah, the Windows or Mac kind?

Someone: No, like…stickies. Post-it notes.

Me: Oh it’s third-party? Is it just called “post-it notes”? What version?

Someone: No, like paper stickies. You know, the kind you put on your wall?

Me: Wait, it’s a Facebook app?

Someone: No, you put them on a REAL wall. What’s wrong with you??

Me: Oh sorry! REAL stickies! THAT’s what you meant.

Someone: Yes.

Me: So tell me, REALLY though, what do you use to organize yourself? It’s iCal isn’t it?

What my job is really like:

Someone else: So, I’m on Facebook now.

Me: Awesome! How do you like it?

Someone: Well, it’s ok, except I don’t really like being friended by all these people I don’t know that well. Plus I’m concerned people can see the info on my profile if they’re not my friend, also I don’t want my picture or name to show up in searches, and I think it’s too much trouble trying to find people and friend them. I mean, I’m kind of a private person.

Me: Hmm.

Someone: So, is there a setting to make it do what I want?

Me: Yes. So click ‘Account’, ‘Account settings’, and ‘Deactivate my account’.

Someone: But that will deactivate my account!

Me: Yes.

Someone: That sounds like too much trouble. I’ll do that later. Also, I have a lot of viruses. Do you know how to get rid of them?
